I'm a pretty safe large in most brands (usually a U.S. 42S in a jacket), but if I'm not looking for a slim fit, I'm wondering if I should really be ordering an XL, as if I compare measurements against items I own that I like the fit of, I'm usually falling between the two.

If you're a 42 then strictly size L is the best place to start, as that equates to a 42.

The shirt has a moderate amount of shape in it, but I'm a 40 and wear a size M in a very casual sort of way, and it's comfortable and nicely shaped, but isn't in any way restrictive.

However, if you're not averse to a bit of extra space over the summer — more of an easy, relaxed look, with plenty of room for the body to breathe, and a bit of headroom for a hotter wash if the daily summer grind / grime really starts to build up — then an XL seems fine, too, especially since its measurements corresponds to items you have already. (If I wore a size L, it'd no doubt look oversized, but if I rolled up the sleeves and washed it ten times, then I wager it'd look quite good.)

It's been a busy few weeks here, despite not very much activity on the website.

We made the first sample of an anorak (the pull-over-head variety) today and it's one of those simple-but-bizarrely-constructed affairs.

We've made almost all Chesterfields for the autumn.

And the hunting jackets.

We've been developing our Ulster coat, which will probably see light of day about 14 months from now in Donegal tweed. Same with the British Warm (officers coat) we've been working on, though there's a chance that that one will appear this year.

We've finished development of the new version of our duster. Bigger, longer, with hood. It will join the production queue this year.

The field jacket, after a few years hiatus, has had a big shot in the arm and is looking good for next spring.

The cloth for the topcoat is due to arrive tomorrow, and we plan to begin cutting in earnest next week.

It's all very forward-thinking with an apparent lack of goings-on in the here and now, I know. But we do have some calico shirts being made, hopefully for release next week, and after that, all being well, a few new colours of our knitted t-shirts.

Very exciting news. I’m particularly interested in seeing what the cloth for the topcoat looks like, need to make my decision which one to go for (if possible a sneak peak would be appreciated 👀).

Plenty of other exciting projects you have going on it seems too!

Very, very excited to see the Ulster and British Warm. Did you pick colors/cloth for this year’s balmacaan yet?

Yessir!

It is the same Donegal tweed as previous years, with the barleycorn design — we are committed to their being the predominant cloth for the balmacaan — in dark brown and a lighter, more biscuit-y / grey colour.

Then we have the other type of Donegal tweed for the topcoat in "granite" grey and loch blue.

Thanks Paul - placed an order for trousers the other day and will opt for L when the hunting jacket hits the website!

Cheers! As and when there is interesting stuff to share, share it we most certainly will.

Hello Paul, regarding this shirt:

What differentiates a "linen poplin" from a standard linen? Is it how it's woven?
I know the shirt is sold out, but curious nonetheless! It's a very beautiful fabric in this buckwheat colour.

Poplin is the type of weave. It's a fairly fine and tight plain weave (as opposed to a twill weave) and sometimes, in the way it is woven, you get the appearance of lines running crossways through the cloth.

Does that help a little?

We try to indicate the type of weave when labelling the cloth, to differentiate e.g. the four or five different linen materials present across the site at any one time.

Definitely, thanks for that explanation. One of these years I'm going to be fast enough to snag a shirt in XL before they sell out!
