You are always hearing folks say American was founded by rugged individualist. But who were these supposed individualists? Puritan? Tidewater aristocrats? Deep Southerners?

Probably men like John Smith/John Rolfe

All the random people who settled the West after the Louisiana Purchase.

    All the hapless silent lovers,

All the prisoners in the prisons, all the righteous and the wicked,

All the joyous, all the sorrowing, all the living, all the dying

I don't think that there is only one group of people that had those traits.

If at that time you where going to settle down in an (in many cases literally) unknown land, you have to have a lot of confidence in your abilities and and a sense(one could say desire) for independence from other people. I think that there are people from all cultures and races that share those traits.
