I have been inside the shop and talked to Marcus Scheer (the current MD).

The premises have something of a monastery or church about them, all dimly lit and everything is spoken in hushed voices. On the ground floor
you find the shoes and lasts of previous customers, strangely enough all emperors, kings, politicians. I could see no representatives of the arts:
no Freud, Mahler, Karajan, no Hedwig Bleibtreu, Ernst Deutsch or Raoul Aslan (famous actors of the "˜Burgtheater').

Joie de vivre (in German: 'Lebensfreude') is obviously not their forte.

Scheer (established 1816) must be the oldest bespoke shoemaker in the world, still run by members of the founding family.

Seems like they like their fun too. If I could get to Wien often enough to make it worth while, I'd like to give them a try- their shoes have a very nice shape to them.

Mausoleum is another term that comes to mind. Here's a picture of Scheer:

It is, but the company is some fifty years younger than Scheer.

Henry Maxwell can trace their history back to 1750, but the firm has had numerous owners since.

Very nice. There were some more posted in a thread about shoe trees, though they might have been from the website. They were lovely, too. And OMG Sator spotting, though he has edited out his face.

Hm. They've already got your shoes ready and waiting for you, I see, complete with monogram:

Their premises intrigue me more than their shoes and that is my general impression of Vienna. Premises always outshine products.
Perhaps I am not partial to equestrian barraks aesthetics of old Husaren....

I wonder about this pair, which is also featured on their web-site:

I've seen them numerous times, I can't say I like the shoes, looks to me rather like something from PRADA,
but I haven't seen the "problem" until today:

Does anyone know, how to get into those shoes, I can't see any laces, elastic, zip etc.
Those shoes must open somewhere?!? - Scratch head!!!

That's how they test you to see if they'll have you as a customer.

I'm also scratching my head at the appeal of any of these shoes.

Yes, but a wholcut, seemless or otherwise, must have an opening to get your foot inside.

Although I can see a small dark hairline, within the yellow stripe; it does not look sufficient,
to open wide enough to let your foot slip in.
