Room Humidifier suggestion?

Has anyone here had good experience with a particular brand/model of a room humidifier? After buying and throwing away a $25 cheapy last year I am determined to get something decent. I am looking at the Air-O-Swiss brand now and so far have not seen any negative comments on it.

Does Consumer Reports/Consumer Guide/etc have any reviews? I have (or rather had) one I bought to use for the birds (yes, I know, call me crazy) because Tucson gets ridiculously dry and can lead to skin and sometimes even respiratory issues with tropical birds... was a POS. Hate it. Filters expensive (and IIRC not easy to find), would get mould (!) at the drop of a hat, would sometimes get water on the floor while trying to get the water reservoir back on it...

Things IMHO you should consider:

Power consumption/idle power drain
Filter cost and replacement ease
Ease of cleaning
Space it wil be required to humidify
Water tank size

Personally, I use a small Holmes one that cost about $25. It's been great, and I just change the filter once a season.

I think the ease of cleaning factor is key -- these things are a ***** to clean. I've had cheap models and expensive ones, and while the pricier models work better, they are still difficult to maintain, and I'm admittedly a bit lazy when it comes to things like that.

I'm inclined to go with a less expensive model, use it for a season or two and then pitch. I know, not very environmentally friendly...I've used Holmes and Bionaire.

I'm really looking forward to a company producing an easy-to-clean humidifier!

I have recently purchased two venta air purifier/humidifier's. There are no filters, they clean the air and provide humidity through water. Bed bath and beyond sells them, but they are on the expensive side. You never have to replace a filter, and the mechanisim that it uses can be placed in the dishwasher so besides filling it up daily it is easy to use.

All of you must be lucky as I have a constant problem with too much humidity.

Well, us East Coasters have to warm up our dwellings in the Winter using some sort of system (baseboard, radiant or forced air heating). Natural gas prices are supposed to be down this winter but I can still get a pair of C&J shoes if I did not have to pay my latest heating bill. When the heating systems are on they really lower the indoor humidity levels.

In the summer we have the same problem as you as it gets very sticky and hot.

You may see people asking for Air Conditioner suggestions in a few month. Sometimes I wish I lived in San Diego or whichever is the locality with 70 degrees year round.
