Thanks.

I can give you 3, all fit the bill, all pretty romantic, older, clean. stayed in all of them. before I drag them out

1. about 15 by bus to everything, or maybe 1/2 hour walk. nice, resonably large rooms. nice staff. a couple of good resteraunts near by, in a upscale residential neighborhood. this is where I stay. probrably the cheapest option

2. better location, right by the termini. smaller rooms, more expensive by 20%

3. better location, nicer in general, larger rooms. maybe at the upper end of your range. old grand hotel.

For someplace inexpensive, nice and well-located (Campo de Fiore), try Hotel Smeraldo.

If I say I'd love to hear all three, will you think I'm greedy? Not sure how cheap this trip will have to be--it could be six days, could be ten, etc. Good restaurants near by would help us consider being a little farther away! Edit - and thanks, philosophe. I'll look into it.

I find venere.com quite reliable and comprehensive. It permits cancellations up to 24 hours before with no charge/penalty.

wow, 250 a night counts as 'budget conscious' these days.

Been in Vietnam too long....
