Montreal, then a car trip along the St Lawrence river, take the Chemin du roi between Trois Rivieres and Quebec, stay on L'Ile d'Orleans, or at Baie St Paul. Wonderful bed and breakfasts all over the place, friendly people, festivals galore, I can go on and on. Depaysement garanti. But the Canadian dollar vs US dollar is not currently to our advantage. I was there recently and found it expensive, but nothing like the trip I took before that to Europe.

What he said. As has already been mentioned, something to consider is the time of year - tons of tourists, reduced, for lack of a better word, infrastructure (Italians all on holiday), coupled w/ the heat make Venice an overcrowded, stinky and potentially unpleasant venture...

Go during the winter and experience Acqua Alta (bring your wellies/waders!)...

If you're outdoor types, consider a week @ Lone Mountain Ranch near Big Sky Montana:

Personally I like Venice, but I think it's better within the framework of a trip that goes to other places in Italy. 10 days would be a good 2-3 city trip in my opinion, but I'm not really big into spending more than 5 days in a given location, i'd rather see more places than stay in the same place for awhile.

Yeah, I wish I could do a tour of Italy, or even a tour of Italy and France where I would visit a couple of cities over the 10 days that I have, but unfortunately right now that's prohibitively expensive. We are about 95% sure we're going to go to Barcelona right now. I figure there's enough there to keep us busy for 10 days.

This is a *bad* time to be in Spain. All the Spaniards are on holiday, and nothing is open.

Also, consider Sevilla and Granada if you're looking for romantic places in Spain. Barcelona is hip and trendy, but for romance I'd tip Sevilla. And you can go off on day trips to those lovely bodegas in Jerez.

Portugal is a good option too - lower key than Spain, a little cheaper - food as fabulous, and full of history.

Going to Ibiza or Mallorca wouldn't be very expensive. You could take a ferry that costs less than E100 and hotels there are about the same price as Barcelona if not less expensive. Nice would be easy to go to as well, via TGV, or Marseilles.

I would go to florence and maybe take a tour of the surrounding tuscan areas. I went there for my honeymoon, and it was truly wonderful.

yeah, if it weren't for portugese food, I guess it's a pretty nice place to spend a few days.

Good suggestion. Very friendly residents, good diving off of rocks, casino for those who are into that.

Ah, being awakened by the fishmonger's cries...

I'd second Malta as a nice place to visit, although I'm not sure it's a great place for ten days if you aren't into the beach etc.

You can stay in picturesque castles for quite cheap on the Iberian peninsula.

Here's the latest. We've decided that the best thing for us right now is to try to save up some money and to keep this vacation as inexpensive as possible. Europe would have been nice, but there was no way to do what we really wanted to do in Europe within our budget. Therefore, we decided to stay in the United States. We decided to spend a few days in Duck, North Carlolina; then, a few days in Charleston, South Carolina; and then, a few days in Savannah, Georgia.

Not a bad idea, lots of atmosphere in those cities. I think I ate at a decent seafood place in Charleston called Hymans or something?
