My favourite will always be the Lachlan - it has the rubber work sole of the Gardener with a thicker, oil infused leather similar to the Gardener - but with the sleeker last and profile of the Craftsman. Best of all worlds, imo. Since getting mine three years ago, the other pairs have all been neglected.

The exact same boot:
From Australia $529CAD
FROM NY $732CAD not including 8% NY state tax

So just for ***** n giggles, even if it cost me $100CAD to ship them from Sydney, it'd be cheaper. Has anyone recently done this to know what it cost actually to ship? Because of the Canadian-Pacific trade agreement, there's no duty, only HSalesTax owed here.

I'm wondering just how much of a premium this deserves. A trunk sale custom Liverpool from Allen Edmonds will run quite less. A Shoebank score would be in the $290range to my door.

A custom Dayton chelsea will be in the $600CAD range
An HD Russel chelsea is in the $900CAD range, and stylistically, it's not really the greatest.
A Viberg similarly $950ish range, if I found one in 2050 or 2020, which is rare. But probably the heavy dutiest?

Any of you have any of the last two to offer an empirical comparative opinion?
A whiskey marble shell AE custom should come in the same $500-$600ish, USD, so similar $950CAD range, but arguably have some risk associated to finishing perfection.

Appreciate thoughts on price to practical use + enjoyment value.

How does one maintain the greasy kip leather boots? Mine have developed some lighter patches on the toes after cleaning off dirt with a damp cloth.

How they used to make R.M.Williams once upon a time.
See the bevelled and shapely waist.
More meaty waist too.
Purchased 37 years ago.
Leather was thick and tough in those days.
R.M.Williams waist.jpg

Compare to now.
Flat waist with no meat on it and no shape or bevel.
Less skilled workmanship these days.
Compare both.
R.M.Williams sole brass screwed 1.jpeg

They still use one of the worst constructions,
the brass screwed.
Integrity of the construction is easy compromised by the brass.
The brass easily rips open the outsole and insole and lets water leak in after a while.
Upper is also compromised because it skimps on using a welt.
Worse construction than blake or cement construction imo.

Not sure if that is a current model or an example of the current construction methods

You’re comparing a flat heeled boot with a Cuban heeled boot, though you may be right with regards to the leather quality. They simply don’t make them like they used to.

Do Gardner boots usually have no mid-sole? I purchased a pair of Gardner on commando. Leather quality and finishing appear good but basically just a thin leather insole between my feet and the ITSHIDE Rubber Commando. I wonder if my feet will forgive me?

@troika Would you mind posting a few real life pictures of your Gardener? I tried the Comfort craftsman but my feet are quite wide, so I am looking for the Gardener, but I cannot find it in any other colors than what seems like very dark brown and black. I am more looking for Dark Tan or something similar, but would very much like to see what they look like.

I only have the black and brown suede pairs. Happy to post those if you need
