Dear all, I'm trying to decide between the Gardener and Lachlan boots. Anyone have experience with both that can help me?

1) What is the difference between the Lachlan and Gardener boots? As far as I can tell the sole is the same but leather is different??

2) Sizing - obviously due to lockdown cant go try any in store - would you say the variants above fit mostly the same or would I have to size down half size for Gardener which looks wider on pictures?

My usual size is 6.5UK for most shoes, I own C&J shoes in 348 and 341 lasts as well as several Loakes in their Capital in 6.5.

The Lachlan is shaped like a craftsman, but it uses a Vesta leather which is more durable and waterproof. They are designed to be sort of field capable boots. They all have leather insoles. I believe there are two vesta colors available, brown and burgundy.

The Gardeners come in a variety of leathers, but yes they do fit a bit wider in the toe. I order the same size in Gardeners and Craftsmen and I haven't had any issues.

There is also the Gammon, which is a cross between the two. It's a Gardener in brown Vesta leather with a tan sole. I have a pair and I quite like them.

I have both. The Lachlan is a nicer colour and a far nicer shape, while being just as robust. Unless you are really buying it solely as a workboot, the Lachlan is a better choice.

I wear the same size in both. Gardeners are a smidge shorter than the craftsman last, though the toebox is a little roomier.

Thank you so much for the replies! Those are some amazing pics @JustinW! The Lachlans definitely look sleeker and more refined than the Gardener.

I think the Lachlan is the best choice, too bad they don't seem to do it in Black!

I was looking on-line at the Turnout Comfort and Gardner models. They look identical. Can’t go to my local stockist for pandemic reasons so I thought I would ask here.

What are the salient differences? Do they both skew more towards the casual side? Different lasts? Same size for both?

Thanks in advance.

The two have different lasts, yes. The turnout is a little sleeker and can be dressed up or down, and the Gardener is a chunkier style usually made up of more casual leathers. Both are round toe lasts unlike the more popular chisel toe craftsman and personally I stay true to Brannock size for both.

Awesome thanks for the detail. I looked at both and saw round toes so I was not sure about the differences.

I have never owned RMW or even tried them on. I think years ago, I would have only considered the chisel toe since it is a bit dressier. But nowadays, since I am in casual clothing all the time, the Turnout or Gardner may be more relevant.

Turnout has a craftsman style sole and heel, Gardener is a thicker and more rugged heel and sole. Definitely better for hiking around. I’m a big fan of the latter - also found on the Lachlan. The Craftsman style sole is a little sleeker for work and is fine for walking around the office.

Greetings,

New to SF. Have got 2 RM williams at the moment, a comfort turnout in chestnut and a black yearling with dynamic flex sole, now looking to add more to the collection. Been looking at either the stockman buckle boots or the sydney boots just to spice up the variety. Does anyone have any personal thoughts/experience in either of those? Much appreciated.
