The first three shots are a burnt pine Ecton on the 888, the next four are comparisons between the Ecton and the RLPL Carter in dark oak on the 89

    Enjoy!

Nice job! So the difference is in the stitches? Looks like Ecton has single sole vs. Carter's double sole.

Another closer look, the Carter appears to have a shorter lake and longer split. Bill, is it why you like Carter better?

I really love burnt pine, another gorgeous color.

Great shoes! Thanks for the pictures.

Burnt pine looks like a pretty flat colour with no antiquing. Is this common?

Andrew, thanks for the great pics, these are both awesome shoes. I would love to see the Carter in Burnt Pine or Edwardian...hmm...[IMG]

Right you are Capt! This particular model has not been antiqued which i think gives it a sleeker quality and makes it a slightly different animal from the Carter.

That's my rationalization of the day and I'm sticking with it.[IMG]

Is this a consequence of way the 89 last is constructed compared to the triple 8? In other words, if one were to order the EG Ecton on the 89 last (if possible - don't know if EG will make their own shoes MTO to RL lasts, which is an interesting question if I may say so), would the split be longer too? Or is it the result of the instructions of RL to EG to make this specific model, the Carter, specifically this way for them?

I believe short lake and long split have to do with the specific design on the RLPL Carter not with last. I don't know if the 89 last is exclusive to RLPL but I don't remember seeing any 89 last under EG label.

Andrew, do your EG Dovers have the same lake and split lengths as the Ecton?

I love both the Ecton and the Carter, however, if I have to choose I'll pick Carter. I like the shorter lake and longer split combo better. That's why I love the the JL Bordor.

I believe, although I don't know for certain, that "˜Ecton' and "˜Carter' share the same basic pattern. "˜Carter' has these additional side-pieces laid on.

In all shoes with a Dover-type apron it is the last which determines how long the shoe's nose is. Here Jun Kuwana compares a "˜Dover' on 808 with another, older 'Dover' model (possibly on last 32). Just like 808, last 89 runs on the long side, that might explain the longer nose:
    http://shoe-com.hp.infoseek.co.jp/monthly02-01.htm

I was told that at one time EG had two different "˜Dover' patterns, one with a shorter, the other one with a longer apron. Apparently, only the longer apron has survived.

    I'll post a Dover/Ecton/Yardley/Carter comparison shot later today with examples on the 888, 89, 606, 202 and 505 lasts.

Bengal, are you referring to this picture?

It appears the difference in split length is greater between Carter & Ecton and the one in the picture.

    As I said, it's only a guess.

Presuming they are the same size, measure from the tip of the tongue to the end of the apron and see if there are differences. If one of the lasts is shorter, a bit more of the split gets pulled under, creating a shorter nose.
