RL recently opened up a Rugby website (http://www.rugby.com/default.aspx)and I was just curious how these line fits? Is it about the same as RL POLO line? I am considering a couple of stuff but I am not so sure if they will fit horribly like the usual RL POLO classic stuff.

I am somewhat interested in this fleece peacoat which isn't horribly expensive at $180. Or am I better off going with another route?

I also somewhat like these band collar button-up. I'm pretty sure it can be had somewhere else for much better quality and fit. Can anyone recommend a similar shirt?

Any help is appreciated.

I never bothered to pick anything up, but the Rugby line used to be all over eBay for cheap. That might change now that they have a web store opened up, but you could check there if you want to get a feel for their sizing before spending retail.

Rugby is a terrible, terrible brand.

The brand tries to be slimmish, but the quality control and design is so poor, it varies from line to line. I have an Oxford from the "Skull & Bones" line, and it fits slim, and I've tried several shirts on in their store here in DC, and they've fit totally bizarre - decent fitting in the neck, waaay too long in the shoulders, short, yet still very billowy.

Rugby suffers from all the problems of the lower end Polo lines and none if its benefits. You're buying $15 shirts for $70 because they're from Ralph Lauren, and because the brand is so limited, you won't ever really have a chance to pick them up at a lower price point, where they might actually be appealing. Even worse, many of the products are covered with garish logos or ridiculous details. Even that peacoat is strange - I don't like the pocket placement, I don't like the extra buttons next to the collar, and, even worse, a peacoat made of fleece won't be able to hold its rigid shape or allow a stand up collar (trust me, that's pinned in the photo).

You're much better taking your money and searching for Custom Fit Polo Ralph Lauren on ebay, buying from J. Crew on sale, or saving up to buy from a better company. Hell, for an extra $10 more you can pick up hickey shirts on sale all day long.

+1 on the shoddy quality. but I think the fit is very, very good. As far as their buttonups, I find a small to be as slim as a medium in BoO, but larger armholes. Also, they have very good jean cuts too, but I would never buy them. I will probably buy a couple beater oxfords now that they have an online store, but I know I'm overpaying for them, i just don't give a ****.

Rugby's quality is hit and miss. The fit is slim/small. Everything they sell is hugely overpriced at full retail. If they have a store near you, it is worth stopping in when they have their 40% off sale so you can assess the quality of each item and try it on. At 40% off, their stuff is decently priced, but no bargain.

As others have mentioned, some of their items are good finds on deep sales, but otherwise I have found that the quality isn't so great. In general, RL is notorious for doctoring their clothing pictures to make everything look nicer.
-If you are looking for some nice banded collar shirts, check out Michael J. Krell, as he makes a lot of woven shirts that have banded collars. His link is at the top of the page with the other affilliates, and I can attest that his quality is simply outstanding, as well as being a very nice fellow.

+1. I have a few oxfords and a sweet pair of cords that I picked up at my local Polo outlet for something like $7 - $15 ea. I had the oxfords shortened and the fit is comparable to BoO. Their cords are my favorite that I own. Slim, not skinny. I said it in another thread but if you like the Polo look but not fit, Rugby is a low-cost alternative. Polo Custom Fit, I still wouldn't call a slim fit.

The quality is on par with J. Crew, Gap, et al. and just like those brands I would never pay retail but with some tweaking they're perfectly acceptable beater / staple items.

I have a khaki cotton Rugby blazer sitting in my closet right now. I'm not too thrilled on the fit on me but it's fully lined, working button holes and a nice silhouette. Much nicer than any other comparable brand.

I'll defend the Rugby line.

The retail prices are a bit ridiculous but I don't hesitate to buy Rugby if I find their items on sale. The fit is slimmer than Polo's custom fit and the quality is on par with the regular Polo line. The designs are more aggressive than Polo too, since RL is positioning this line to compete with Abercrombie and J.Crew for the college-age crowd; judging from the Rugby items I've purchased the cloth and craftmanship is slightly better than either.

Thanks for all the advice and opinions. I might just wait for the sale since I doubt I'll regret it too much if I miss out on it.

Any recommendations for other brands of banded button downs? The Michael J Krell button downs are all checkered pattern. I am looking for a similar stripe pattern similar to the Rugby version. A little vintage looking.

Just don't buy retail and they're fine items.

I just think it's a travesty that they have the rugby.com domain... Bastards...

Apparently they trademarked a bunch of long-standing Rugby team names and are refusing to let the teams play under them anymore. Ironic considering the brands roots...

And by roots you mean the name?
RL Rugby has never made actual rugby items. It's just some RL exec's brilliant idea to get the young hip-yet-still-summers-in-Kennebunkport segment.
RL has proven time and time again what a ****** company it is. Copyrighting British boys' schools' crests and names, as well as established companies like Barbarian is a new low, however.

Well, yea, the fact that Polo is still a trademark owned by Brooks brothers.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
