RL Cordovan Boots

I purchased some RL cordovan ankle boots on bluefly size 11 for $279 (Retail $595) they are great. The sole is rubber, and has worn down. I would like the change this to a double leather sole to make them a little more stylish (and continue to wear them). The cordovan is very high quality and they polish extremely well. Can I have this sole change done successfully? Has anyone changed a rubber to a leather sole on quality shoes? The boot is bench-made and has hand written marks on the interior for size, etc. http://www.bluefly.com/pages....duct+ID

Regarding the original question, never tried to. On the other hand, I never buy rubber sole shoes. Luc

Why don't you email Crockett & Jones (which made the McCallum--it's basically a cordovan Chepstow) to see if they can do it? Even if you don't have them do the work, they can tell you if it is possible.

I don't see why it wouldn't be possible -- the advantage of the Dainite sole is that it is a goodyear welt.

Dainite sole - where can these be replaced in NYC? My guy wants to replace it with a Vibram, and I said no thanks...

E uses Vibram rubber soles, and I don't know who makes Alden's rubber soles but I haven't seen an Alden with Dainites. I haven't heard of any place in the US that will resole using an English sole like a Dainite or a Ridgeway.

Alden may be able to resole them with their commando lug sole, which seems similar to a Dainite in material if not pattern.

I have the same boots and I also bought them from bluefly (summer 2004). I picked them up for an even $200 after getting some much needed customer service TLC. I've been very happy with them; they pulled hard duty this past winter and held up extremely well. As retronotmetro pointed out, the boots are made by C&J and under their own label are sold as the Chepstow. C&J will replace the Dainite sole with a double leather sole if you wish, but they won't resole the boots if the uppers are cracked. I'm curious, why do you think the double leather sole makes the shoe more stylish than the Dainite? Â With the storm welt they are a chunky boot to begin with. Someone mentioned at Ask Andy that Ben Silver will send C&J's over to have them serviced. Now, whether they will send RL C&Js is another issue. You might want to contact RL, too.
