Rise issues on first fitting of custom suit

Hi all. I'm new here on the forum. I've done a pretty thorough search on threads related to the rise of suit pants, but I have a question I'm hoping some might be able to help me with.

I recently went in for the first fitting of a suit I had custom made. The rise seemed to be cut too short (i.e. the pants hugged my crotch more than they should have). The tailor, to his credit, immediately noticed this and started analyzing the issue. He made some horizontal chalk marks along the inseam of the pants that were probably close to two inches below the lowest part of the crotch.

So, the suit has gone to the workshop for adjustments to be made. I've since learned that the rise of pants is among the most difficult things to effectively adjust. I have a two part question, I guess. First, are the proposed alterations feasible? Second, what things should I look for at my next fitting to make sure the job was done correctly?

I should clarify that there was no muslin mock-up. This is first fitting of the real suit (seams already sewn, but pants unhemmed, etc.). Thanks in advance for your help.

I had a similar issue. I end up giving it to a different tailor who recut the pants for about $100.

They are going to let the crotch out. Result depends on how much outlet is available to let out and how much bigger you need it to be. This is the simplest cause and effect. A more complex issue is how the trouser is cut for your body type and if the two are compatible.

I always seem to have an issue with that as well, but thetailor was good enough to alter it so all's well that ends well. It is ok to ask for a second fitting if need be.

Several fittings can be arranged to with the tailor to ensure the crotch area is just right I had a similar problem too but they can easily fix it, just a minor alteration.

When you order first suit from a new tailor, you should always proceed with a basted fitting. This allow the tailor to make more adjustments when the suit is almost completed, but has been completely stitched together yet.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
