I have a 58 inch HP DLP from about three years back, when they first came out. I can't begin to explain that marvel that is the picture on that TV. Better than any other DLP/Plasma at the time. Unfortunatley, there is a design flaw that causes the TV to overheat, after a few years, you get posterization. Picture is shot to ****, not fixable as per the guys at the AVS forum. HP stopped making TV's :sad:

Luckily the missus works for Sony now

Very sad news indeed.
I expect more eqipment makers to go out of business particularly at high end of the market.
Unfortunately Aiwas , Boses , Burger Kings and Wallmarts of the world will always weather the storms.

Amazing TVs at only 3x the price of a very good LCD TV? No surprise they pulled out.

They priced themselves out of the market. The high end plasmas were great, but not enough of an improvement over the best LCDs to justify the cost differential.

Are you talking the pio elites? Even the regular Kuros were fantastic and better than any LCD.

+1, but that's not a high bar. Almost any plasma is better than any LCD.

Unfortunate news. I guess not enough plasma buyers were willing to pay something like a 50% price premium between a very good plasma like Panasonic and to a great plasma like Pioneer. If this price premium was smaller I think they would have sold a lot more TVs.

+1....I was really interested in Panny's planned partnership with Pioneer. For those spouting about the LCD vs. Plamsa market, please check the research, very few of the electronic companies are doing well these days.

Plasma was just a stop gap technology. Too many cons (especially weight and power consumption) for the general mass market.

As advanced as technology is in our day and time, most techs are nothing more than just a gap to fill a temporary void. If you're thinking LCD will continue to be a major player 15-20 years from now, I'm betting you're wrong. Outside of the old tube television, technology is just a revolving and evolving door of different advancements.
