I interviewed him in the early 80's when I was in college. He was a great guy. Down to earth and normal. He told me he lived next door to Kareem Jabbar and that they'd hang out and listen to music.

big fan, straight life and red clay changed my life. It took me a while to really see him as a master of trumpet because I was always stuck listening to someone else, ie. Davis, Ferguson, Sandoval, Gillespie, Morgan, Terry. etc.. It's interesting, the first time I heard Straight Life was at a jam session and they just gave me the music, they couldn't believe I didn't know it.

+1 on his place in Jazz history. He's one of those guys caught between the pantheon of Miles and Wynton. You've heard him on so many things, but couldn't pick him out of a lineup.

Sky Dive, Red Clay, and Povo are excellent songs. He had an authoritative way of playing trumpet and flugelhorn. I miss him and can't stop listening to his records.

He played the Indianapolis Jazzfest last June, he was in poor health back then. At one time he was one of the greatest.
