Right size for a wide shoe?

Couldn't find the Clarks I wanted in town, so I ordered a pair online. Although they fit well enough, for the first time in my life I'm realizing a size 11.5 wide might be my true fit over a 12. Is it common for a size 12 wide to be longer than a 12 normal? Or do Clarks run large? Measuring my foot at its widest near the toes is 3.75inch, and 11in from heal to big toe.

Or maybe I don't know what the right questions are.

It all depends on the "last" used to make the shoe - the shape of it. For example, I am a 9.5D in some shoes, a 9.5E in others and a 9D in one shoe (all US sizes), That's based on the shape of the shoe and the shape of my feet. So, a given shoe that is 11.5 might feel longer than another shoe from a different last or company because of it's shape and where it hugs your foot.
