BBC Top Gear's Richard Hammond has been seriously injured in a crash at 315MPH while filming for the latest series.

He has been airlifted to hospital, but reading between the lines from the various reports it does not look good.

British, Irish and Dutch viewers will know him.

Get well soon Hamster, you have entertained me more than most over the last few years.

And leave the driving to the Stig.

This is very saddening. The TG team has the X-factor they so often speak of, and has the legacy of not pandering to the lowest common denominator as is so easy these days.

Good luck, Richard, you're in our thoughts and prayers.

I normally wouldn't care if some TV host got hurt, but TG is the only car show that's watchable. Not only is it watchable, it's actually enjoyable as those two are pretty damned funny. I hope he recovers.

I just started watching clips on Youtube, and I am very sorry to hear this. I hope he recovers and goes back to doing the shows, although he won't drive any more cars that can top out at 315mph...

I hope he turns out to be ok.

Hamster always gets the dangerous gigs.

He's the one they put in the car that they hit with lightning.

He's the one that they put in the car that they drove into the pool of water.

If he pulls through this one, I bet they make a pretty amazing show episode out of this (and they'll probably need to hire a new guy to do all the dangerous stuff.) Maybe the Muppet, Beaker could use a new job.

What and where exactly does one "drive" at 315 MPH? The only thing I can think of that is that fast is nitromethane top fuel dragsters and a few hydrogen rocket vehicles.

Nitromethane top fuel dragsters have spoilers and upwards firing high pressure exhaust that provide around 12,800 lbs of downforce (the neccesary amount to keep the car grounded and sort of stable) at 325mph. The vehicles are designed to produce around 8000 horsepower, and consume 11.5 gallons of fuel per second at full throttle.

By comparison, a fully loaded 747-400 consumes the same amount of jet fuel, but produces 25% less energy.

On a good run, the driver of a top fuel drag car is subjected to 8 g's (or 8 times the force of gravity) Shuttle astronauts at launch are subjected to 3.2 g's.

If you strap yourself into something this frighteningly insane, you should probably be prepared to die.
