Harry Rosen is the worst. They aren't staring at you to make sure you are not stealing, they are judging when you don't fit in with what they think you should be wearing.

Am I the only one who doesn't seem to get weird stares from retail people? Even the completely clueless ones are relatively friendly to me.

Then again, much of SF seem to have social anxiety issues so that could be the cause of it.

This is common with me as well. I simply remember that they are retail clothing salespeople and I am a young man with a PhD. So **** them.

Sales people staring is not very common in my case...except for some stores where salespeople are instructed to watch out for "buying signals" and then "assist" customers in their purchasing decisions. Will never forget a BR store somewhere in the South many years ago...a salesperson observed me going thru' a stack of chinos, and then approached me and said, "If I could find your right size, would you buy them today?".
In expensive boutiques I never get bothered: I think salespeople there are accustomed to certain degree of eccentricity from their customers, and just let it be

At maxfield they follow you around and pretend they aren't following you around because they are instructed to do so. The annoying thing is that they pretend they're folding clothes or whatever so I **** with them and go back and forth throughout the store.

This is why I like sw, ryan says hi and that's it. First time I went in there I was able to look at everything forever while he did whatever it was he was doing.

Yeah I think this, too. It's the best when they act pretentious and that you somehow shouldn't be in there because you can easily remember their job is to sell clothes that other people design, construct and reap the profits of. They get paid hourly and probably very little.

Yeah, I still haven't bothered to go to maxfield. You warned me, haha.

Most of them i find are quite bored, so i usually have a small chat which results in a discount or put on a mailing list for future discounts, lest being invited to a party afterwards.

This is terrible salesmanship. Selling anything in retail is a conversation, and you NEVER initiate contact with a customer with anything that can be greeted with a 1 word answer, ie "no". Bad sales training is bad.

It's called a hard close...might work in selling cars when you're stuck in a cubicle and can't leave, but sure isn't the way to go peddling $48.00 pants that fit like **** anyways

I find the worst is Boysco, that store never makes you feel welcome. Mind you I would never buy anything from there since they sell CA, Ed Hary, Boss, True Religions and the like. Although they do have a lot of North Face wear that is great for the winter but the staff are so unwelcoming and stare at you as if you're going to steal something.

I work at BR and it ******* sucks. You don't get comission, yet managers track sales. It's one of those places where they insist you inform all your customers of your name, no matter have little contact you've had with that customer. I know enough about how the store operates/the clothing/how things should fit to avoid ever having to deal with sales figures, but yah, it's becoming a nightmare.

if they keep staring, make them look for an item at the storeroom just before you leave .
