I did like DBK. I thought everything was a little too earthy/braised/creamy and would have liked a little touch of acidity/umami/crispiness to balance it out. Then again, maybe it was our ordering. We were very satisfied with our meal too and immediately agreed we'd go back to try other stuff.

Did you try any of their special cocktails? They have these big infusion devices on the bar and they make seasonal spirits they use for cocktails.

So, after two delivery meals from Hung Ry, I have to say that the food is off the charts. When we are blown away by a bowl of noodles in soup when it's delivered 30 mns later and we have to re-assemble the whole thing ourselves, I can only imagine how good it must be right out of the kitchen there. I also like the fact that they adapted the menu and got rid of the offal overload that was everywhere initially - I now want to try every dish on the menu rather than only half before. Appetizers are also superb.

I tried one specialty cocktail - it was a rabbit something .. bourbon and ginger beer w/ lime and mint. I didn't like. Ended up moving to Keeger's stout beer.

I got WASTED on Thursday night... so it could be I just wasn't in a bourbon mood.

David Burke makes some great food but it is mainly like him... fat and fairly unsophisticated. It has a lot of flair and is refined in its own way but the man is a bit of a philistine and it shows in the food.

Still had some great meals there though, and I maintain that he has the best "Steakhouse" in Chicago, maybe in the US, even though it looks like a restaurant in an airport.

FWIW - the James hotel in Soho looks fantastic. The bar has a big outdoor area that will be killer when the weather is nice.

I think the James in Chicago looks fine too, but whoever designed the restaurant should be fired. It really looks like a Denny's.

Can somebody explain to me what ramen is? I hate to sound like a moron, but other than those styrofoam cups in grade school, ramen has never been part of my world. Seems like you guys love it.

At these places, it is a thin, round, freshly made noodle (I believe it has egg). It's served in a variety of rich broths, with various Japanese accouterments including pork belly, egg (hard-boiled or poached), fish cake, greens, bamboo, etc.

It's really good when done right.

Wow this place sounds great! I'll have to try it this weekend. I've tried other much vaunted hand pulled noodle places in Chinatown and they were mediocre. The noodles were fine but the broth and other ingredients were disappointing.

I'm going for ramen tonight. I am sure it will suck, because it seems like SF is ****** for this.
