Replacing Shoe Trees

Hey,

Do shoe trees "go bad"? I mean I've had shoe trees for 5 years now (sort of showing my age here...) and they still do the job and all (i.e. maintain shape) although they've become odorless at this point. Should I replace shoe trees every couple of years or do all of you more or less use the same shoe trees... forever (until they break somehow at least)?

I've heard people mention giving them a quick sanding to get the smell back. I've never done it and don't really care if my trees smell or not (so long as they don't smell bad).

I would imagine that it depends on how often you wear the shoes that the trees are being put in.
