I was wondering if anyone had a good resource for learning about the meanings behind each of the regimental English rep ties that are around. I’m sure there are quite a lot but I figured someone may have some info on a way to identify them?

I checked the web and only found vendors. No compendia per se.
There are four main categories, which some UK members, who
are more knowledgeable, might change: Regimental or military ties;
College and University ties; Organizational, eg a professional associations:
Clubs.

I found a listing of British military ties, but without any details on the meanings of the colours:

Edit: this has a book recommendation but it's quite old:

I’ve just been dipping into The Book of Public School Old Boys, University, Navy, Army, Air Force, and Club Ties [London, 1968], with a helpful introduction by fashion historian James Laver. It’s the classic on the subject, beautifully and extensively illustrated with every one of the 749 ties associated with the various schools, military, and clubs of the United Kingdom and Commonwealth countries at the time of its publication. Every designated tie, from the Abbotsholme School [Rochester, founded 1889] to York University [York, founded 1947].

Some stories (I have no idea how reliable):

Sometimes the story behind the tie is as colorful as the tie itself. One afternoon in the 1920s, for example, the actor Norman Forbes Robertson wore a salmon-and-cucumber number to lunch at London’s exclusive Garrick Club, joking that it was the official club tie. So many members wanted one that the club formally adopted it. The I Zingari Cricket Club boasts the colors black, red, and gold, symbolizing the motto “Out of darkness, through fire, into light.” The orange-black-blue-and-yellow tie worn by the old boys of Wellington College takes its hues from the ribbon of the Crimean War medal.

1950s Harvard sports teams' knit ties:

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
