I searched and didn't find much. Does anyone know if it's possible to remove lettering/stitching from the front of a shirt (IE: someones initials) without damaging the material?

thrift store purchase?

I've had to fight to put something back that had someone's initials on it.

Removing a monogram will leave a scar. Each stitch in the monogram is a hole in the shirt. That's a lot of holes in a small area.

It will leave a visible mark on the shirt once removed...I have seen many Borrelli shirts and Filenes with monograms on them.

or you can make up some corny reason for why you have the letters there

"My son, some day the initials on this monogram will all be yours!"

Seriously:

Different ways to sew them cause different levels of damage. If there is a backing, the sewing may have done less harm. Also the holes show less in fabrics with more open weaves.

I took a monogram off a shirt once with a razor and a lot of squinting. Not sure if it was worth it, but I wanted to try.

The best way to cover up the damage of the de-monogrammed spot is to sew your own initials on top of it.
