I've done this to two pairs of 5EPs recently and a pair of Nudies back in the day -- with a kitchen knife -- and it turned out fine. Nothing looked weird. No holes. No discoloration. Just make sure to do it before you wash them for the first time.

Are they relatively new or unworn? As long as it's not a huge pattern, you should be fine. It's denim, so there won't be a bunch of holes since it's a relatively thick-threaded loosely-woven fabric.

Get a seam ripper and go to town.
