I'm interested in recommendations as well (although I'd be looking at something lower than dr no's budget).

Since you're in NYC, I would say just go to the Fountain Pen Hospital and talk to one of the sales guys. They've been helpful to me in the past, and they have a pretty big selection. Nothing beats actually holding and writing with them to see which you prefer.

I know it's complete heresy to real pen afficionados but I really enjoy my rubber starwalker and Rotring 600. The slightly industrial design, I guess.

I've always been a ballpoint guy for daily use (and prefer Waterman for this), but I definitely second Mont Blanc for rollerballs. I've tried a few, and they were far beyond any others I have tried.

I like Pelikan and Lamy. Take a look at some of the Italians too.

I own two, both in Sterling Silver. One, is a Waterman that I believe was in your price range, but I bought it about 10 years ago or so. The second one is a Pelican and it is a bit more, but is awesome. The balance of the pen is perfect and it writes beautifully.

The Cross Century series is my favorite with gel refills. One of the oldest pen companies in the world and still made here in the good old US of A. Lifetime guarantee too.

The Porsche design series by Faber (AFAIRC) are quite nice. I quite like the TecFlex series.

I'd say S.T. DuPont. I think the others are fine choices, but I think S.T DuPont has a great weight and a nice feel in the hand and writes well
