Just ordered a 9D and and 8.5D. Quick question about stretch and sizing on these:

8.5D fits right foot perfect, left foot is just slightly crammed in the toebox, width-wise. The length is fine.

9D fits right foot decently (very slight heel slip), left foot loosely (more heelslip).

Best move is the 8.5D, because it will stretch, correct? Or should I keep the 9D and get insole?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Crammed as in the shoe running too short or too narrow? If the latter, return both and get 8.5E.

I'm a huge fan of Iron Rangers (see avatar...). I've gone through different chukkas but wanted a more classic, high quality leather boot that was a little more casual than the Gentleman Traveller or a Wolverine 1000 mile boot. I've treated them with mink oil a couple of times, and they are probably the most comfortable shoes or boots I own.

Question: anybody know if you can have red wing's "iron ranger" sole & heel put onto a pair of their 875s? I've been wearing my 875s for a year and i love 'em, but i've always had a preference for a heel, and I think the sole looks great too.

So can I put this sole & heel:

    ...onto this boot:

    Thanks for any input!

You can send your shoes back to Red Wing for resole, and you can specify what sole to put on it. I remember seeing a price list of different soles somewhere, and the prices are pretty reasonably. You can email Red Wing and ask them about it, they reply to email fairly quickly in my experience.

I don't think Iron Ranger's sole would look good on the 875 though...

I want to see if they'll put a leather commando sole a la the gentleman's traveler onto an iron ranger. I'll let everyone know what they say.

    Sizing question here:

I had a pair of Iron Rangers in size 7.5 EE (Extra Wide), which I eventually ended up selling because they were a tad too big. I had heel slip even with thicker socks.

Now that I'm looking for a new pair, should I go with a 7.0 EE or 7.0 D?

For reference, I'm measured at 8.0 D with dress socks on, and I wear 8.0 D in dress shoes.

Thanks, Tsekh, I actually found a photo from somebody who resoled an 875 with an Iron Ranger. It looked ok, but I'm not sure if it's quite what I pictured...maybe I'll take them to a cobbler when the time comes and see what we can come up with. You're right, though, Red Wing responds super fast! I hit them up on Twitter, and they replied the next day.

Hawthorne is the way to go in IR. Mine look fantastic and if I want leather I just put on my GTs or 1000 miles.

I've been wearing my IRs for a couple months or so and have noticed that the outer heels are wearing out much faster than the rest of the outsole. Any ideas as to what I can do to prevent this?

can anyone clarify a question for me? if you look at the Amazon product page for Iron Rangers there is a Amber and Amber Harness color, listed as two different colors, but only Amber Harness/Black Narness/Hawthorne Muleskinner on the actual redwingshoes site. but the Amazon pictures show the amber color to be that reddish brown flat color, and the Amber Harness to have some more texture and uneveness to the color that makes it seem a bit more stylish, which I much prefer. meanwhile i was looking at an auction where the seller shows a picture of a darker brown color, assuring me that it is amber harness while the brown doesn't look as reddish as amber and definitely is a flat color, making me think this is an entirely different color. Is there only one Amber a.k.a Amber Harness color? or are there at least these 2 variations?

I just received my new pair of IRs that I got from eBay.
I noticed that when the boots are on a flat surface, the points of contact is at the front edge of the heel, and only on one part of the front of the foot. Regarding the front part, it seems like the sole isn't perfectly flat, but rather rounded.

Is this normal and will it go away after breaking them in? Or are these defective?

Quick question here - I'm trying to decide between the IR amber harness in a size 9 and the copper rough & tough in an 8.5. Having never worn IR's before, I'm not too sure what to go with, and since I'm out in the boonies, theres nowhere to try 'em on. I usually wear a 9.5 (Vans), and some people say size down .5 and others say size down 1. I'd say I have fairly average to medium width feet. Suggestions?

If in doubt order from someone you can easily do a return if needed.

    I would go down a 1/2 size.
