I live in Montreal Canada and winters get pretty bad here. You name it, cold, snow and slush, we got it.

I've been looking at a few Red Wing boots, specifically the 1907, 8131 and 8138. How do these hold up to the conditions described above? I ask because these boots don't seem to have any lining in them and I would hate to have cold feet!

Also, do I have to size down for these boots as well (like the RW GTs) or do they fit true to size?

Thanks

hi,

i would recommend the one with the thick black vibram sole, they are isolating the coldness best.
then you should use a insole and thick socks. i would size down max. 1/2 size.
have a look at the 8146.

I know you guys might not believe me, but there is a thirty seven page thread on the next page, completely dedicated to Red Wing boots.

There are plenty of boots that are better for a harsh winter than Red Wings.

Red wings stand up to the slush and snow, but will get cold! I use RWs as winter boots, and when we´ve had colder periods (-10 to -15 celsius), they def are too cold. Only way to handle it is to size them for heavy wool socks (which I havent). I would rather recommend some thinsulate + goretex beans boots.

It doesn't get that cold in Montreal. As far as wear goes, as long as you put sno-seal on your boots, and clean the salt off them when you get home, you should be fine. The cold isn't usually an issue unless you make a habit of spending days standing outside. I've been out for an hour with these boots before in cold weather without getting numb toes or anything like that. Edit: But yeah, obviously, don't wear light socks.

I wear Iron Rangers in Ottawa without an issue at all. Just put on some big socks.

I wear unlined RW's in Edmonton winters. So, -15 on the reg, -30 to-40 on occassion. Granted, I just walk a bit on campus, not even more than 15 minutes outside. But, I think cold is very relative, and I would think they are fine for use in Montreal.

^ Agreed that RWs works just fine for shorter periods of cold weather, but when actually being "outdoors" (e.g. my several hours walk in the woods the other day) RWs will definitly leave you with very cold feet.

Wedge soles are **** on ice and slippery spots. I couldn't walk up a hill a couple weeks ago.

What are you doing with them? I mean, for any way I use them, my GTs are fine in the winter. That said, I never spend more than an hour walking somewhere, and I never have to stand for a while outside. I could see them getting cold if I did. If you have to do anything that requires insulation in your boots, I'd go to CT or Mark's and find a workboot with a heavy lining to wear. It won't look as good, but hey.
