I just bought a pair of Red Wing 875's. In the store the guy told me that i would need to put an insole in them for them to fit properly so i bought a size that fit nicely WITH the insole in. And for the first 3-4 days they felt great. Then i started to develop this awful pain at the top of the boot on my right ankle. It's not a rubbing or anything but like the top of the boot is just cutting in to my ankle. It's pretty damn unbearable. I've taken it to two different shoe guys and they both kind of hit it with a hammer and then said they really didn't know what to do and didn't charge me anything. I'm at a loss. They aint cheap so i'm not about to give up so i'm hoping that someone here has had a similar experience and can help me out on what to do.

thanks in advance.

i went and got the thickest smartwool socks that i could find and that makes it so i can wear them with the laces untied and not be in TOO much pain. but it's still pretty bad.

oh and "don't wear red wings" isn't exaclty helpful, but thanks anyway.

When I first got my red wings my ankles looked like a scene from Passion of the Christ. It felt like I was wearing bear traps. When I got another pair I didn't tie them up as tight at the top and it was a lot better. Still some discomfort for a bit but nowhere near as bad as the first pair.

Try to return them. If you can't just tough it out, it will likely get better. If not, sell them here.

I don't know if this helps but, I had a smilar problem with my desert boots. Just wear them around more for like a whole day, that's what I did the pain was unbearable and then after that I put those shoes in for retirement because the pain was simply unbearable. And then after a few days of just staring at them I decided to put them on again, and they were great. I think you just need to break them in a little more, because I had a smiliar situation where it was first comfortable, then painful, and then it got comfortable again.
