Red tie = too powerful?

I think you answered your question here. Although it depends on a lot of factors, an important one is how the wearer feels about it. If you wear it well and confidently, it will work. I think what you just said shows you may be a little self conscious of the brightness when you're wearing it. This may subtly come across somehow in tone, posture, etc. I would go for a burgundy instead.

If you buy it, wear it to a dinner function or something.

I don't like red ties in general, even darker ones. Nothing wrong with them but I'll choose a different color every time, and since a small number of ties keeps me happy (15-20) there's no room for red in my collection.
