Find a vintage Hamilton on Ebay. I have a Hamilton Sherwood from 1950....love it.

No doubt the Reverso is the correct choice. The cheapest Reverso Classique I have seen is MRRP £2500, although online it can be had for about the right price:

Awful colour on that strap though; this watch, the cheapest mechanical in the range, always seems to come with this strap. As some sort of punishment for buying it.

I'd prefer to buy from a bricks-and-mortar shop, ie face-to-face with the dealer, so it might all work out. My brother-in-law is not a watch snob, but he likes watches. I'm trying to get him to break his habit of buying flashy quartz shite which he indulges all the time: Diesel, Kenneth Cole, Fossil, that kind of thing.

At the end of the day, it's got to be something he's happy with, that I'm happy to give as a representation of what I think watches should be, and at a price I'm happy to pay given that it will be worn without full appreciation.

I like vintage watches but they are not going to be acceptable as a wedding gift. Not in my family anyway, worse luck.

Lots of good ideas here, as always.
