Poke, but it's 85th and 1st. Most (inexpensive) sushi in NYC is kind of blah.

I find that lunch. for sushi, is a much better deal. I used to go to a place called Takahachi all the time down on Duane St. It started out great. Excellent food and cheap. Now its good and getting a tad pricey. I am sad to say that any sushi I have had in NYC that I would consider very good/excellent was so $$$ that I could hardly enjoy it.

We always go to Sushiya on 28 W 56th St, between 5th and 6th, and almost always order the Sushi for Two set for $32 plus miso. Is that reasonable for dinner? I think the sushi is pretty good for the price and we've been to lots of places. If you happen to drive there is usually meter parking right in front around 7pm.

Also on the same street is Menkui Tei, for ramen noodle, cash only. Maybe $9 per bowl. Very authentic.

How is the sushi, atmosphere? $32 for 2 people is very reasonable. Sounds like a good bet, and its a pretty straight shot on the subway for me from williamsburg.

I would say good food, not too much atmosphere. It was actually pretty dumpy, but a couple years ago they remodeled and also increased prices. When we first started going there sushi for two was $28. I've never been there for lunch. We always go on a weekend night before a show or after a matinÃ

e. Candles on the tables, "asian" looking wood slats on the walls...

And it was $32 sushi for two + miso soup + drinks + dessert + tax + tip... I don't remember how much it comes out to.

It's been a couple years, but they have combination lunches with a soup, sushi and salad for $18. The set is called "My Favorite Sushi", the $16 deluxe sushi combo is also good. Both are pretty filling.

Good choice. I've been going for about four years...

You know it's raw fish, right?

Used to live down the block but never been - people (used to?) rave about Yama. Same w/ the place next to Lupa on Thompson (Tomoe?)

Go Sushi on St. Mark's Place is great. It's not the cleanest place in Manhattan, and sometimes you have to wait for a table during peak times, but you can get a good quality sushi meal there for $20-$30 depending on how much you eat. It's run by Japanese people too, which seems to becoming less and less the case these days.

Mizu Sushi, on 20th between 5th and Broadway is also a good bet. It's not dirt-cheap, but it's got a nice atmosphere, is good quality, and I regularly go there with dates, both of us have more than enough to eat + sake, and it's never been more than $50 per person.

+1 This is a great spot. Sit at the bar and they give you a great special roll (always different) for free as soon as you sit down.
