Recommendations for heavy grooving

Hey guys-

Do you have any recommendations for heavy grooving rock music?..I prefer sunny lyrics and a pulsing beat to get me moving in the morning

(those last two are more rock than reggae, but I assume you don't mind)

The Cars
Talking Heads
Everclear
The Grateful Dead if you're judicious in your song choices
Frank Zappa with the same qualification (plus the sunniness is generally sardonic)

The "sunny lyrics" part is really throwing me . . .

However, if you want some really heavy stuff, heavier than fast metal could ever be, check out Sleep. "Dopesmoker" is good. It'll ******* streamroll your mind.

What you want is power-pop. There are your early proto-power-pop bands like the Beatles, or The Who, who later went all artsy-fartsy or arena-rock. IMO, the first real PP band would have to be Big Star. PP's commercial peak was around the late 70s, and early 80s, riding the coat-tails of punk, new wave and mod revival. Tons of British acts, and Yank groups that tried to sound British, like The Romantics, The Knack, etc.

The list of kick ass power pop groups is just too big.

Or, just get everything that Teenage Fanclub has ever done and that should keep you entertained for a long time.

Oh, and Tamla-Motown, early soul, R&B, and Stax also has a deep groove with good lyrics. Any Holland-Dozier-Holland song would make for killer morning music.

I find Leftfield to be more slow tribalish DnB rather than powerfull get up and move kinda music. Although their second album (the one with Afrika Bombata, I forgot the name) has some speedier stuff.

I really liked the new Chemical Bros until it started being beaten to death in commercials, etc. But now that it's back mostly off the radar, I can pull it out again.

Thanks for all the recommendations..I will see if DJ Ricks has any of these tracks.

I think the Stone Roses has both great riffings and sunny lyrics

..but man I listened to their CD so much I can almost see the other side.

I just discovered the Romones

today -does anyone know this band?

I think their lyrics are rather sunny and the groove is pretty heavy too

The Ramones! I don't know why we didn't think of that before. Perfect for you. The album "Acid Eaters" has a lot of surf tunes...they even do a cover of Surf City by the Beach Boys.

Good call, I've been rocking the Ramones in my car the last couple days and it's been good for my trodden soul. Also on the disc are the Cars, which you might try. And the Clash.
