Sunshine Superman by Donovan and Incense and Peppermints by the Strawberry Alarmclock.

A lot of SA is nowhere near groovy or sunny. Listen to Black Butter and you'll know what I mean.

I think I have heard some re-makes of Cars songs recently.

Also if you like that 'Cars' sound, Weezer had at least one album produced by Ric Ocasik (the blue one).

...

How about: the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Primus/Les Claypool, old Aerosmith, AC/DC, some of the stuff by Led Zeppelin.

'Strawberry', that reminds me - Shuggie Otis, he's groovy. But not very heavy or rock-like.

I loved that Weezer album - it was on heavy rotation for me from like 95-97.

Say It Aint So still one of my favorite songs.

what about smashing pumpkins? maybe not happy lyrics, but what they lack in cheeriness they make up for in pure kickass shoegazing energy.

For more "Cars" sounds... there's Do The Collapse by Guided By Voices - that was produced by Ric, and a lot of GBV fans slag it - but it does have some great pop songs on it, nevertheless (like Teenage FBI). Also, The New Pornographers are very power-pop, and have a heavy Cars vibe to their sound.

+100 for the Ramones!

Nick Lowe did an album called "Power Pop for Now People". He was better at producing Elvis Costello than doing his own stuff though. Maybe some of the older guys here remember.
