Do any of the other London correspondents have a recommendation for somewhere I can go, preferably in central London, to have some simple clothing alterations done without paying the Savile Row surcharge?  I have a few shirts with sleeves that are slightly too long and I also have a coat with shoulders that are slightly too broad.  Someone trustworthy, competent and reasonably priced would be great.

This company, Jeeves of Belgravia, are not the cheapest, but they are reliable and their work is top quality. Alternatively, call into Old Hat in Princes Arcade, just off Jermyn Street. David Saxby, the proprietor, will almost certainly be able to give you a suitable recommendation.

There are plenty of alteration tailors on the upper floors in the little side streets of Bond Street and Regent Street. Most fashion shops, the really large ones excepted, do not do their own alterations, but farm them out to one of those workshops.

There is one firm I have used a few times, but I don't know their name. They're in Maddox Street at the corner of New Bond Street. On one side is Avi Rossini on the other Pinet shoes. They are located in the house next to Pinet on the first floor. In working hours there is one of those big signs out on the pavement. Whenever I have used them, they have done a competent and reasonably priced job.

The likelihood is that Jeeves uses the same kind of workshops, particular if the alterations are a bit more complicated. An added problem is, that you will have to deal with retail staff, who probably know very little about tailoring. It is always good that a competent tailor sees you and can advise you what he can and cannot do
