Recommend some data recovery software

I've got a mate that has asked me for a hand recovering data from a hard drive of his.

I had come across some pretty powerful software years ago, but my current searches just turn up crap on google.

Anyone used anything good that they can recommend?

getdataback wasn't too bad when I used it.

I used R-Studio to recover data once. It took quite a while for the program to do its thing, as it spends a lot of time checking and rechecking the drive (left it running overnight), but I got almost all the data back.

Note - you ought to run the software on a separate drive to recover the data - otherwise you run the risk of over-writing the existing data, which defeats the purpose.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that as well--use another drive.
