Of special interest to SF, here is one from "the leader of the Bad Shirt Cult".

That's gotta be the largest plaid pattern I've ever seen.

here's a great track of the same guys who did the second track you posted (mobb deep), with nas (the kid that basically taught em how to rap):

if i was you, then i would do what i have to but you aint me, you hesitated so i clapped you

also, nas is your best bet for gritty east-coast hiphop. he is a legend in his own right, and the last, best echo of what pac and big promised to be before they were cut down in their prime

get his entire discography but pay particular attention to the following albums (in no particular order):

1) illmatic (lush production)
2) it was written (as raw as eastcoast gets, apart from maybe mobb deep)
3) stillmatic
4) i am
5) god's son
6) hip hop is dead

as far as southern rap, just get every outkast album ever made (even that fruity "the love below" two-sider), and maybe some three-six mafia and goodie mobb. southern rap was built on the backs of these folks

Han Solo did it better.

I didn't read what kind of rap you wanted but I vote you exclusively listen to Ill Bill, Necro, Non-Phixion et al.

2nd the Motion on Illmatic. It's pretty much one of the most bomb a$$ rap albums of all time.

In re: Tupac, right man, wrong album. All Eyez on Me is where it's at.

This is without a doubt the best rap album. Snoop's best flow and Dre's beat are so insane that if your head doesn't bob it's either because you're dead or deaf.

Somebody mentioned Ice Cube. Death Certificate is one of the most aware albums. Great friggin' lyrics. I really like Lethal Injection, as Bop Gun is one of favorite tunes of the 90's.
