So I decided that if I do well in school next semester, I will buy myself some higher-end denim. I want something thicker than my Crate or Cheap Monday. I'm thinking 14.75oz denim. So far I am considering Ande Whall Grifters because I like low-rise jeans more than 501 style repros or w/e. Any other recommendations in that price range?

Okay, so something heavy, but what else? Slim straight, straight-relaxed, slim bootcut, relaxed bootcut? Tapered relaxed, tapered-slim? C'mon man, work with us. Details man, details.

haaha my bad, all right something like:

slight bootcut, maybe a relaxed bootcut. a slim straight may work, definitely not tapered though. What does the APC NS fall under in that case?

NS are tapered. I'd rule out APC jeans. The grifters seem really tight and straight, almost tapered look even though i don't think they are. I'm just going by what they look like on people. What about nudies? The Ralf(bootcut), or sven(straight) in dry selvage might be what you're looking for. There's always rag and bone, but i don't know that much about them as the 32inseam only policy doesn't really work for me.

Well I am 5'6", so a regular 30" inseam usually.
The grifters may be too tight for me, so yes I am still looking.

Maybe some Skull denim? I'd love some Samurai but I do not know about their fits (aren't they all 501repros?)

NS are slightly tapered... but the silhouette is so nice you'd really like them.
I've always been a bootcut type guy (love my RRDS) but NS are a real great way to expand your look a bit. In addition, quality is on par with RRDS with what seems like heavier denim and the color (purplish) to my eye is great.

Not all APC are tapered. The Rescue is straight and the NS is barely tapered as dingle said. The quality of APC denim is definatly something worth checking out.

the studio d'artisan sd1002 is your jean.

they have a very very slight bootcut. it's hardly noticeable. the rise isn't nearly as bad as the 501 repros and the denim is 15oz.

i got mine from BiG. I had them hem'ed 1/2 inch before wash. After washing, the inseam is now 33.5''.

I have 1945 canes, oki's, bootcut samurias, gap gough's.

The studio d'artisans are probably my favorite jean. (actually i like them all but the cut on the d'artisans is just fantasic).

the problem with the studios are that i feel i can't spend that much, i was thinking something under $200. i mean that may change when it comes down to it, but ya still looking for suggestions.

14 oz selvage Johnbull are $202 at Blue in green. Supposed to be more of a modern cut.

I would suggest 5EP low bootcuts (size down a full 2 sizes unless you like a slouchier look - they run large.) They are about $260 (raw or 1 rinse resin), but can often be found on sale under $200. The rise is medium (a little under 11"), and bootcut very subtle (they look nearly straight). The denim, construction and trims make them a great value on sale.

I would recommend JohnBUll Sewing Chops. Problem is that all of their bootcut models are pretty slim (SC005, for example), as is the true straightleg (SC007) which also has a really low rise. They will look good on a slimmer guy, but you seem to have some bulk all around. Same with the PBJ 005s, which are quite slim. The SDA 103 is a true straightleg, but because of it's slightly roomy seat, has the effect of looking slightly tapered.

An aside: true straightlegs are very versatile insofar as they can look tapered, It's all in the proportions. For example, by contrast to the SDA 103, my SC007s, also a true straight leg, look like a true straightleg (pegleg) because of the really low rise and straight cut hips combined with a slim straightleg (16.25" from knee on down on), while my Spurr Classics have the look of a relaxed jean (not unlike the Soraiko - get the latter if both are retail) because the rise is low (about 9.75"), and the top block is pretty slim, while the legs are very straight, with a very, very, slight taper to the knee (17.5" around) that goes straight down. The difference of 1.25" through the leg makes a huge difference in the overall look. Other factors, such as the tightness of the weave (a really tightly woven denim tends to "feel" lighter than a loosely woven denim of the same weight) and the denim weightm will also make a difference. The SDAs (looser denim, 15 ounces) look tighter than the Spurrs (13.5 ounces, tight weave) although the leg measurements are pretty much identical for the same size.

Well for what its worth my Samurai s510xx are a lot slimmer in the seat/theigh than the sc hawaii's (which I beleive are based on thier 47 cut) that I ended up sending back. And I beleive the s5000vx is a bit slimmer than the s510.
