Recommend a watch for a female friend, $1500

My friend is looking to purchase her first nice wrist watch. The only watch she owns and wears now is a Polar HR watch and I gave her a hard time for it after I saw her vacation pictures from Spain and Greece where she rocked the watch along with a dress at fancy restaurants.

She's looking to spend $1500 or less. I know a goo deal about watches but not women's. I would love to see a thin Longienes on her a Cartier but I haven't been keeping up with prices. I am fine buying gently used for myself but I don't have the patience or desire to convince her to do the same. So I need something new. She's fairly petite so keep it classy. No big watches.

I personally would advise against quartz because I hate them but I know it might be hard to find a mechanical for that price range. I also know she would not like any sort of manual wind.

Your advice would be appreciated.

I will check with her about Michele. First time I've ever heard of the line. Is it legit or is it more like Movado or Kenneth Cole (ie fashion brand instead of watch brand)?

Ok, an update - she said she absolutely does not want an automatic What *shudder* quartz watches should I be looking at?

Hampton and Riviera are elegant models from Baume & Mercier. The Don Giovanni and Parsifal models from Raymond Weil are nice, and they are priced a bit more appropriately for a quartz watch. Hard to justify paying $1500 for a quartz. You may also consider Concord.

you can't buy a Cartier for $1500. You could probably buy a very old women's Rolex and have it on a cute croc band for $1500, and she might like the vintage aspect of it if it's a) way old and b) you romance it up.

I'm always a fan of anonymity with watches. For women, I like the smaller Classic Waves from Ebel. Versatile, nice enough (MOP face, diamond markers) and can be had for really good prices (but don't expect them to be an investment like a good Rolex). Decent house movements. I can also get behind the Baume et Merciers for many of the same reasons (but they use ETA movements, which are fine).
