Recommend a Paris Neighborhood for 4-day visit

I'm staying in Paris for 4 days and 3 nights during the last week in May. I'm soliciting recommendations on neighborhoods for our stay. This is my girlfriends first trip to Paris and my first visit since a teenager. We are focusing on budget friendly, boutique hotels (3-stars) and prefer neighborhoods that are less tourist centric, but charming and accessible to mass transit. My coworker told me to avoid Arr 1&2, and consider places in either the Latin Quarter or Arr 6.

As a reference, I live in Brooklyn and like the neighborhood feel of a Carroll Garden, Park Slope, Upper West Side, Tribeca, etc. as compared to a Midtown/Times Square sort of environment.

I don't think anything in Paris will really have a Times Square/Midtown feel (since you're not going to stay in La Defense).

Would look into the Marais/Place des Vosges area if I were you, and also Saint Germain.

Bastille?

And yeah, Marais is great.

If I were you, I wouldn't focus that much on the neighborhood. Rather look for hotels that are in your budget, and then decide whether the neighborhood is fine.

Yea that's what I did before I started scamming credit card offers to stay at nicer hotels for free. Paris isn't that hard to get around in, and is extremely walkable, particularly if you're staying in or on the border of the inner arrondissements (Clarify, like 1-8, and where the 16th, 17th, 14th etc. border them).

Yep. People tend to mistake the suburbs with the core area. The core area/historic center is pretty small (1/3 of Berlin) and has like 2 million inhabitants. The center is where you will spend most (or all if you don't visit Versailles) of your time.

Another vote for Marais or sixth. I like the 16th as well, but it is a bit inconvenient.

The last couple times we've stayed in Rue Vavin in the 6e. Low-key, but still close enough to the St Germain action. Nice little shops, cafes and easy walk into Luxembourg Gardens. Not too touristy.

Definitely not the Marais, unless you find something appealing about a mostly seedy old ghetto which is becoming rapidly less Jewish and much more gay. I would suggest either the 6th or 7th, the former being, in parts, more cutesy touristy and the latter somewhat grander.
