I can't imagine what that would be like AND owning a store. Like an alcoholic owning a liquor store?

[IMG] You hit the nail on the head. Oh, by the way, I have seen goodbye Lenin. Great story.

Is there any Jil left for anyone else in NYC?

I know what you mean, I'm already buying winter shit again. Picking up margiela jacquard knit beanie and charcoal two-tone wool/satin scarf this week along with cream micro herringbone line 10 pants and black/ash heather V neck.

    Bring on winter.

Got a Martin Margiela 10 jacket today. Sort of a cafe racer mixed with a members only jacket in a sturdy black canvas. Also received my Filson duffle. I am not officially ready to travel. Because everyone in Moscow Idaho is impressed by Margiela, 5EP, and handcut leather belts.

They have a black shopper version of this out as well.

I'm excited to see in the next year or two how men's bags and acces. develop at Jil. There is a big push for them with a expansion of the design team, not having to deal with Prada and they have even opened an accessories only boutique in Moscow.

While I like the bag, this seems so wierd. I have read lots of interviews where Jil voices, and pretty militantly at that, that she is not interested in expanding her accesories lines. iirc, this was part of what got her up in arms against the Prada group, that she was being pushed to do accessories. How the world changes...

I thought Jil Sander had nothing to do with the brand "Jil Sander" anymore...which would explain the accessories since she isnt around to voice her dissent to anyone that cares

I know. But it is still strange. And I thought that it was even stranger that Justin, who is in the industry, would be a fan of this departure from Jil's original vision, or not even mention it. Is all. Just an observation that the new guard of buyers are not in lockstep with Suzy Menkes.

Hmm that sounds like the jacket I almost got at the Margiela store in Paris last week (at least it fits the description, it was from s/s 07 and could be had at 40% off). I can't believe I left that store empty handed--it was jam-packed with hot items, and pretty much everything in a size 48 as well [IMG]

Yes there is SOME Jil left lol...I'm holding off on the metallic blue parka and black duffle for a bit because at least on a night if it drops to 70 I can wear this lol.

As per Jil's anti-accessory thing...I think it was more of not wanting her name on $250-$400 little bags that would saturate the market like Prada nylon and water down her name. Even now the cheapest bags are about $1000 and they are just a simple black woman's clutch. There is a small men's messenger for about $1000 and then everything else jumps and stays in the $1700-$2500 range.

Also, part of me says that any aversion that she had to that was part of butting heads with Patrizio simply because she had to answer to someone and that was not her style at all.
She was a total control freak to the point that she made sure the associates in the stores had the tags facing a certain way in the clothing and that even the stock draws were organized in the way that she demanded them (as though she would now the best way to organize a back store room to make it efficent to get a new size for a customer). I doubt deep down she had a problem with increasing some of the bag/small leather production (I'm certain she didn't want it to trump her clothing); but, I'd also venture a guess that part of it she was disagreeing simply to disagree.

Yeah, I obviously don't know Jil Sander, the person, but your hypothesis sound pretty reasonable. The story I heard was that it was pressure exerted by Patrizio for her to expand in accessories and to use less precious fabrics that were at the heart of the arguments, but it wouldn't surprise me that personal animosity was in fact the root issue, given the widely circulated anecdotes about the principals.

In 2001, she had a really terrific saddlebag/messenger (this was the season everyone went "ye olde country".) It retailed at Barneys for about $900, iirc, but the dollar was much stronger then. I wonder if the dollar were as strong now what the prices for her accessories would be. I guess we'd just have to check the EU prices. Someone? Anyone?

Her last collection, my favorite bag (and jacket) which I am so pissed I passed up on and didn't buy.

It's funny how hard Partizio was on Helmut and Jil to get them to start and turn a profit when it's obvious that Prada will probably never become a public company because they have SOOOOOO much debt and Miuccia loves have total artisitic freedom and not worry about doing what is best for shareholders.

Also, interesting to note that in the year since Raf has taken over and Change Capital Partners bought Jil Sander they halved their losses to about $17 million and were on track to break even this year. However, they are going to just miss that mark because A) it took them longer to become independent from the Prada distrobution system and B) because one shareholder with less than 1% of stock is not willing to sell his. Due to that they can't go private and are going to have to organize and annual meeting/report and continue the legal battle to get him to sell. They are cutting their F/W advertising about 30% to try and help cut some costs.

You know who I think would do a great job with both Jil Sander and Helmut Lang, though probably Helmut Lang would be a better match? Staff SPA. I mean, my inner snob often sniffs that Margiela used to be a nice, relatively inexpensive niche brand (I think that he was called the designer's designer a lot,) but the truth is that Staff has handled both Margiela and DSquared pretty well.
