Now I'm being told to send them back, and upon receipt they will be inspected and a refund issued. I will have to send a statement of costs to receive a separate payment for shipping.

This seems odd--the seller could easily never reimburse me for the postage. Should I receive payment of shipping before sending them out? I had to pay for shipping before the item was sent to me so...

You just fucked yerself...if you send them back and they dismiss the fault as minor, you paid to send back shoes they're either going to keep, or charge you even more to send back to you.

If you now tell them "oh, it's not that bad, I guess I'll take 15%", they have grounds to suspect you're exaggerating the complaint to get as much out of them as you can.

I asked for upfront payment of shipping costs. If not then I can file a complaint as this is not in accordance with their policy to cover shipping after receipt, so the burden shouldn't lie with me.

OK, best of luck. I personally favour Fuuma's approach.
