About 15-17 years ago I had the bright idea of buying my pots/pans from a restaurant supply place on Canal. I saved a ton of money (all clad and still use them to this day) but the trauma of walking east to west on Canal when it was in full swing has never left me.

My dad LOVES Canal and walks it almost every time he is here. We all think it is strange.

Someone give me a San Francisco equivalent. Is loving Canal like loving the Haight or like loving the Mission?

Also, are any of you native NYCers? I know Manton is a hippie beach bum from the Central Coast, but what about the rest of yous?

Canal is like a cross between the Chinese clutter of Washington street, the filth of Market aroud the civic center and the stench of the tenderloin, plus street sellers hawking fake purses and other crap. Sort of unique.

Sounds kind of like Broadway in Downtown LA between 4th and 7th on a weekend

east village is pretty dirty too. trash cans are always overflowing with trash, smell isn't as bad a chinatown but literally garbage everywhere.

Canal is not the worst part of Chinatown from a filthiness point of view but the crowds and lack of personal space are a little suffocating.

    Comparison is a little WTF.

Now that I am a tourist in SF and no longer have to suffer being a resident I can look at it with slightly less of a jaundiced eye. Today for example is a lovely day and for once there's no wind/fog here in Pac H.

I demand a recount. How can SF not even be in the top 10 of dirty cities? This is bullshit, dammit.

Also, I get to complain a la Manton that it's too fucking hot here today. I was wearing tweed last week, and now it's in the freakin' 80s.
