The 405 is not fucked 24/7. It's how we get to my in-laws' place in Manhattan Beach, and it's frequently flowing freely. Also, I'd take driving from Manhattan Beach to downtown LA or Silverlake/Los Feliz (my frame of reference as a frequent LA visitor) than any kind of driving on 880. 880 sucks balls and it goes nowhere I'd want to be (no offense, East Bay folks).

My commute from south San Jose to the city on 280 helped me to fall in love with the Bay Area. I was staying with my cousin until I found a place in SF, and that drive, with the marine layer tumbling over the hills... :inlove:

    Go Bears.

LA traffic sucks because a huge swath of its important areas have either no reasonable freeway access (looking at you 405, westside) or no freeway access at all. Basically everything from Century City east to Ktown has to be traversed by surface streets which can't handle the amount of cars in the region.

I've never, ever, even been caught in a slowdown on the GG bridge.

Weekdays 405 is actually OK-ish from about 9:30 - 3:00 or so, and then again after about 8:00 pm.

Weekend days are kind of unpredictable. Weekend evenings are generally OK unless there's something unusual going on. It's really just the morning and late afternoon/evening rush hours that are a horrorshow.

    That's definitely an issue.

In my experience, the worst part of the 405 is that it's unpredictable. The 101 down the peninsula shares this maddening characteristic. South of 92, all bets are off.

The issue with 280 is that it can get dangerously foggy. I was driving home one night on 280 in pea-soup thick fog. I'm glad to have made it back alive.

Let me get it back on track: New York sucks because all these homesick Californians move here and fuck things up with their reminiscing and nostalgia. Especially the tall ones.
