i feel like only a relatively small portion of this thread is actual bitching about NYC, especially when you remove that continual bitching about the MTA. Heck, the discussion of great grocery stores lasted like 10 pages.

I like to keep a running tally of how many rodents I see when I'm walking my dog at night, excluding squirrels. The other night we saw one mouse and three different rats in 30 minutes. Two of the rats scurried away, but one of them thought it would be a cool idea to come up and try to make friends. That was pretty fun.

Food, whether restaurants or buying of ingredients, is unquestionably the best part of living here.

Granted, the whole going four places to get stuff for dinner thing can get old (gotta have a negative in here somewhere, right?).

    FTFY.

What kind of self-respecting New Yorker is less interested in real estate pr0n than actual pr0n?

Which portion? The "being young and able to do whatever you want" part, or the "sharing your life with another human being and not acting like a dumbass" part?

I think one of the issues with living in New York is that the high-end is just so stratospheric. They are just so many places that cater to the rich, much more than elsewhere. It's easier to realize that you are a small fish in a massive ocean of consumption. BTW I kinda think this applies to Styleforum too.

yeah, but it's no different than any other city. When I was in San Fran visiting heismatt, we still went to 4 places to load up on ingredients for dinner.

This is very true. I do think that if you can't learn to accept this and be happy with your life for what it is rather than how it ranks, then you won't be happy here. Because unless you're a billionaire, you will never be so rich that there won't be someone right across the street, in your building, or two seats away from you at your office with a lifestyle you feel like you will never be able to afford.

Sure. It's your decision at the end of the day. Just don't ever think you can't do better. :foo:
