i hate when people say this (not trying to pick on you). I see it more as those who succeed here would have succeeded anywhere else anyways. I suppose it looks like i'm repeating the same phrase, but I see it a little differently. i realize this will make no sense to most.

those who don't succeed, and there are thousands and thousands a year, are more like that girl in the article. that is, they come from all over the US, usually went to some second-rate college and did well there, and then they took a second-rate job that pays $35K a year to start (a few years ago, i read that this was the average wage for new grads moving to NYC), then realize that the upside just isn't there for their job and they take off and return home.

I would only move to NYC with a six figure job lined up.

Anything sub 60k in NYC is fucked up.

Yet so many people do it, happily.

I was making sub-60K when I first moved here out of school and had no problems. Sure, I drank beer out of a can and had a roommate, but ya gotta start somewhere.

Well yeah, it's obviously doable, but I don't want to have to be stressed about spending $20 here or there.

I also don't want to live in a shithole apartment with 3 other roommates and 1 bathroom.

And finally, I want to be saving money at the same time.

All of the above is impossible with 60k.

If you're stressed about spending $20 here and there you will always be stressed about spending $20 here and there.

I'd much rather start poor in NYC and work up (if you're good at what you do, that will happen) than come to NYC with a pocket full of cash only to resent how fast it disappears.

That's not true if you're stressed because those 20 bucks might materially impact your budget.

If you're just stingy and stressed, then yeah.

One more thing: I may be keeping my completely, ludicrously unnecessary car while living in the city, too. That shit be expensive.

So stress yourself out having it on the street.

Sounds to me like you just don't want to live in New York.

You have nothing but hard excuses why you don't want to, but nothing other than inspirational "all young people should" drivel.
