park slope phase usually only lasts 5 years. from there they go off to university towns (like Burlington VT), or places like Portland Maine. But they also have the golden parachute of moving back to Minnesota (twin cities area) which is slowly competing with Brooklyn, Portland Oregon as hipster ground zero.

Will I become as jaded and cynical (misanthropic, even?) as you all if I move to NYC?

Does anyone else get really annoyed when someone whose total experience with New York is visiting it a couple of times talks about how much they *LOVE* New York and that we're all just SO LUCKY to live here and that they would LOVE to live here?

It's even worse when 95% of their time has been spent in Midtown and SoHo.

"It's just got so much ENERGY!"

Yes. It's part of the New York experience.

only after 4+ years. years 1-3 will just be bitching about housing prices, which is an accepted fact for most all NYers.

i get more annoyed by those who visit a few times, spend all of their time in Times Square and SoHo, and then insist that they could never live here because of the crowds.

Why do you even have an opinion about what those people say or think? They don't live here.

Somehow I never thought about that, but that's definitely worse.

if there's an opportunity to belittle one's incorrect opinion, I usually leap to the task.

See I think people have a warped perspective of the housing market here. Prices aren't that bad, it is just what you get for that price. People will pay the same amount generally regardless where they live it is just how much space they are getting. If somebody is renting an apartment for $3k, or a house for $3k that is still $3k.

part of it is this, part of it is the general MERICA perspective that more, bigger, better, faster is always the best, and in NYC you're always sacrificing bigger and better housing.

this is why I can't stand watching the non-international version of House Hunters.

I think the hipsters from Minnesota come to Chicago.

    +1

Although watching someone, particularly from Texas, downsize from a 5 bedroom ranch to a studio in Rome, Paris, Tokyo, etc. on HH Intl is pure joy.
