Reasons why New York Sucks

OK, I'll start.

-Humidity. It's always humid. Even when it's 70 out it's still horribly uncomfortable because the humidity will be 91%.

-It costs $5 to cross the magnificent Golden Gate bridge, one of the most iconic structures ever built in the history of the world, which spans the magnificent Golden Gate, the entrance to arguably the finest natural harbor in the entire world. Whereas it costs $6.50--each way!--to cross the forgettable Whitestone Bridge, which takes you from the Bronx to eastern Queens. Yeah!

-Nothing works. New York has only two kinds of infrastructure: brand new stuff, which will be fine for about a year, and everything else, which is allowed to deteriorate with no maintenance. E.g., at Kennedy, if you are in Terminal 4, it's fine (for now). But as things break, none of it will ever be fixed, so it will shortly look like the rest of the airport, where all the elevators and escalaors are permanently out and everything else is filthy. At SFO, meanwhile, even the shitty older terminals still have working faciltiies and decent food.

-Nanny state-ism. You can't make a right on red anywhere, even though it's clearly safe 99% of the time. Roads that can clearly handle 55 or even 60 will have posted speed limits of 40. Don't get me started on transfats and drink sizes. Oh, and while I don't smoke, I note that a pack of cigs here costs around $11--nearly all of that sin taxes--whereas in California they are around $4.

-Blue laws: you can't buy wine at a food market and even the liquor stores can only be open 12-5 on Sundays. If you show up for Sunday brunch at 11:00 and want a Mimosa, tough luck.

Beats not being able to buy any liquor at all on Sundays...

I could not stand that constant humidity. Also, the smell of large cities.

Not applicable to bars and restaurants.
Agree with the rest. NYC hey days are well behind it. It is a big and safe American Mall.

Blue laws do apply to restaurants, they can't serve booze until noon.

Blue laws for retail here too- no alcohol sale at all on Sundays other than restaurants and bars... and wacky rules regarding retailing food and wine together... don't get me started.

Bah, try growing up where I did. The government run beer and liquor stores, the only retail alcohol allowed in Ontario, were both shut by 6pm Saturday and did not open until 11am Monday. When I was home last time I noticed they were open half days on Sundays now. I think cross-border shopping really opened a lot of Canadian eyes about how shafted they've always been.
