It is a cliche, but I'm never 100% sure what it means--that there's a dearth of dumbasses sitting around in reading groups pretending to understand difficult books that they've half-read? Something like that? Off the top of my head, I can think of a professor who could devastate us all intellectually when it comes to European intellectual history (in English, Latin, or ancient Greek--she probably knows Hebrew too, but I'm not sure), and she seems pretty happy living in Culver City. And I'm sure there are lots of folks just as learned teaching and living in southern California.

I've always felt a certain agoraphobia in between places in LA due to the never ending expanse of cement/asphault and the lack of pedestrians. Even with thousands of people around in their cars I feel like I'm out in the middle of nowhere. However, once I get somewhere, I generally like it very much.

Echo Park is hipper than my neighborhood and has been for a long time. Is this list from 2001? The Silver Lake photo is a salon/barbershop at the bottom of my hill with photos of Beck everywhere. It's hip for cheap guys who used to follow Pavement around I guess.

From the Bay Area and visiting LA (UCLA area) the following weekend after Labor Day. Will report back
FWIW I enjoyed my company during 1 day visits or drunk night debauchery during my last visits. Perhaps a 4 day stay will give me a better picture.
Visiting the Belasco Saturday night. Fun.

I enjoyed my stay aside from the heat.

Plenty of people to look at if that's your thing.
