Shopping and food in LA >> Shopping and food in NYC, in general. Yeah, haters gonna hate, but the geographic vastness of the place allows a lot of slightly eccentric, idiosyncratic, places in LA to flourish and develop their own atmosphere. In NYC, everything in the LES looks like is belongs in the LES, everything uptown is uptown, etc... LA is full of genuine, amazing, surprises. That said, you can throw a rock and hit a decent place if you are not in NYC, and not in Times Square. In LA, you can drive 2 hours and not figure out where you are going.

There's no need to talk about L.A. endlessly because people in L.A. are actually enjoying being in L.A. (minus the traffic).

If you don't like it, you can always leave.

    • Our tap water tastes like ass.
    • Urban sprawl.
    • Driving 45+ minutes to get good Chinese.
    • The Valley.

The traffic and perhaps the lack of an "urban" city feel (if one actually gives a shit about that) are probably the only legitimate gripes. It's not the greatest city for say, fine dining or finance, but it's adequate enough.

The "vapid, shallow" stereotype that gets thrown around a lot by non-Angelenos is ridiculous in itself, and annoying in its ubiquity.

Truth. I really like him as a director if only because he films the SF Valley lovingly instead of falling into the banal suburbia-is-characterless-hell shit. He must've grown up somewhere near me because I recognize virtually every location in his movies.

Hey, I'm stretching here! I love this city beyond words.

How about this one: just another clear and sunny day in LA:

people who went to usc are pretty awful (hey all!). but USC is also part of the greatness of LA. Seriously -- where else is the most exclusive private college located in the worst possible neighborhood, while the public school is built on some of the most expensive real estate imaginable? it's perfect LA

IIRC their founder's quote actually mentioned something about "the white master race" achieving dominance over all others.

If I was an LA person I would quickly get ticked that so much of what passes for US current culture models itself, or references itself, off what is perceived to be LA. I'm sure the reference point is actually fallacious more often that accurate and that would also end up bothering me.
