Someone in custom clothing whom I spoke with recently, said there are three main types of man that get custom clothes:

1. Because off the rack clothes fit him poorly.

2. He hasn't got any time (or sometimes talent) to shop.

3. He Loves to get dressed and wants special things.

The only thing they all have in common is that they can afford custom clothes.

I do it because I've a crush on the tailor's twin daughters. =)

One of them gets to measure me everytime, and you simply can't beat that. Every man's fantasy.

I don't believe item 2 is all that common unless we include made-to-measure as fitting within the definition of custom. A bespoke garment is relatively time consuming compared to walking into Neimans and having a salesman hack up an OTR suit for you.

I wonder how this is going to end up being an insult towards Manton? I've got nothing on this one, but somehow I know it is.

#1 is a definite with me since I'm tall and well fed

#3 is also an issue but less so than #1...if I had more money, #3 would be the main reason why

On a side note, FNB is not obsessed with sticking it to Manton...so let's here it from FNB on his choices on this thread

Number 1. It's almost impossible to buy a suit OTR with a big chest/neck and small waist.

I assume #3 is another way of saying that one cannot find the style, quality and details they are looking for in an OTR garment - I would imagine this to be one of the most common reasons. Sometimes these "special things" aren't necessarily all that special or peculiar. Sometimes they're the most basic thing - how many times have we read posts lamenting not being able to find a decent solid navy blue OTR suit?

Combination of 1 & 2, at least for shirts. I have reached my limit of time+effort I'll spend to find a shirt that fits as well and in the price range as the MTM shirts I get from my tailor. They might be out there, but I haven't found them yet and don't want to spend more time and effort trying on shirts at retail & discount outlets.

2 is maybe non-existant cause taking meassure takes time too (and then you lose or gain wieght etc.). Also 1 is a no-brainer- custom made things should fit one better, *normally*. 3 is the most interesting point to me- but still I would think this to be very very rare for the reason that - out of the few people who get custom clothes- even fewer go for "too" special modifications since their primary reason IMO is to "look" very well in their clothes- which means that (for me) ideally 1) their body is perfectly silhouetted by their clothes while yet 2) allowing them the most comfort and freedom of movement while seeing 1) fulfilled; and this "dialectic" doesnt allow for too many special modifications w/o them looking too much off/strange. Now hypothetically if I were to already own a good selection of classically well fitted clothes (lets say about 40-50 suits in several cuts and colours) then I would go for more extravacant items...that if is big cause of course behind it stands the secret dream of many a modern fashion geek: to have some master-tailors on standby 24/7 for some utterly ideosyncratic costumey creations according to my fantasy and whim- but then I'd have to be king or something- todays (political social ect.) system doesnt support it- en contraire- even in a well cut/well drapped suit one tends to stand out too much, nowadays...

What does it mean not to have any "talent" to shop?

For me, I like my clothes to fit and to look the way I want them to. Most of my shirts are MTM. One of the main reasons being that as much as I like striped shirts, I can never find good enough classic stripes without paying premium. When I do find nice shirts that fit, the collars ended up being too short or pointed than I would like.

Plus once you go custom, it's really hard to go back.

What about someone who's just too obsessed with detail for RTW?
