I went to the RM Williams store in NYC today to confirm my suspicion that I purchased a pair of Craftsman from them a year ago a 1/2 size large. I tried on the smaller size and was correct, but before I could purchase the smaller size the manager mentioned that they could re-last them 1/2 smaller at the factory in Australia for the same cost as a resole ($130). I was surprised as I assumed this wasn't possible but he assured me that they would be shipped to the factory in Australia where the soles would be removed and the 9.5G boot placed on the 9G last and re-lasted to the smaller size and then resoled. Im wondering if anyone has had this done before or if someone more knowledgeable on shoes can confirm that this is in fact possible and would be just as good (and much less expensive) then buying a new pair in the correct size which I am willing to do if this wont work. FWIW I think the manager believes he is correct ( and he may be) but I was hoping to get another opinion or two before trying this, or buying a new pair in the correct size.

    Thanks

email conversation I've had with RM Williams years back. Insole is a more economical choice with the prohibitively high shipping cost to Oz.

A relast in Australia costs S139.95 plus postage back. You can post them to R.M. Williams 5 Percy Street Prospect SA 5082. Please include contact details so that the Store can contact you for payment.

Would be very interested to hear if this is actually possible. I have a few pairs of shoes in 9D, but I'm a true 8.5E (not RM). I've never read anywhere that cobblers can do this without distorting/overstretching the leather

I've heard that it can be done but have no personal experience.

If i wait till the begging of May they will ship them from the store for me when they do their monthly shipment. I could then have them shipped back with the incoming large shipment the next month or pay to have them ship back once finished, so the postage wouldn't be bad. I have two pairs if no one knowledgeable can comment on the feasibility of the downsizing Im thinking I will buy one new pair and try this with the other pair to see how it works. I appreciate the reply's so far.

Thought I would let anyone interested know I had this done with both pairs and it worked great.

The problem is not so much the re-lasting, but the upper/pattern not fitting any-more. Suddenly the toe cap is too short and part of the medallion disappears under the welt: the proportions of the re-lasted shoe are not right and look off.

Think about it, JM Williams with their whole-cut Chelsea boot does not have that particular problem.

RM Williams store in NYC did it, they cover the shipping to the factory in Australia both ways. It was $300 total for both pairs only downside I can see is due to the factory location it takes about one month. But the alternative would be buying new pairs of boots so that's being picky. They are able to do a half size either way as well as width. What bengal said makes sense, similar to a patterned suit certain alterations though possible would be ill-advisable but in this case a plain wholecut is easy.

I actually have a pair of madallion wholecuts (not RMW) I had made on a wider (G) last but it was just a tad much. I plan to contact the manufacturer to see if they can re-last to an F (same length) so I hope it will not be a big issue. The medallion is also long/narrow (like a "T") in the middle of the toe so it should not be off.
