Alright, so I'm a 17 year old senior in high school looking to broaden my wardrobe for school and summer. I'm trying to look for articles of clothing that can be used often (hats, shoes, sweatshirts, etc.) as a starting point, and here's what I have so far. Once again, these are all just casual clothes/footwear for wearing around school, around town, to the movies, beach, etc. Anyways, here they are... Shoe #1- Onitsuka Tiger by Asics Saiko Runner™ MT I don't know, I just like the look of this shoe while at the same time it isn't too flashy. Shoe #2- Tommy Hilfiger Theo Same reason as the last shoe. This I'll probably use for more formal occasions, but its not going to be a dress shoe or anything, just a nicer looking sneaker. Hoodie #1- WeSC Truman Like the Asics, I just like the style of this hoodie but at the same time it's not too flashy. Hoodie #2- O'Neill Gaviota Hoodie Once again, cool look, not too flashy. Like the Theo compared to the Asics, this hoodie is a little more clean cut than the WeSC. Hat #1- Braves '2T TEAM-BASIC' Black-Gold Fitted Hats by New Era Like the look, like the colors. Hat #2- Batman 'REPEATING WINGS' Sky Fitted Hats by New Era Kind of an odd pick, I know. Cool color, and I don't mind the "nerdy" subject matter (actually, after TDK everyone seems to love batman). I know, nothing special. But anyways, for a normal teenager, what do you guys think? Anything strike you as too goofy or just plain dumb? Any help would be appreciated. EDIT: By the way, I'm not asking you to choose between the two options. I plan on buying each of the above listed items. I'm just getting two of each to diversify my wardrobe.

At least you're right about the Tommy not being a dress shoe.

This stuff isn't going to set you apart at all from any other kid your age. Why don't you actually learn to appreciate style by reading this forum and other sources of info and figuring out why some things are better than others? Then you will have more to go on than "I just like this because it's cool." You'll know why a certain shirt is considered cool by people who really know shirts, etc. Then you can incorporate your own style into it and go from there.

They're all perfectly fine if teenage skate rat is the look you're going for. And there's not a thing wrong with that look for a teenager.

Appreciating style is about finding what works for you, making the way you dress or style yourself an expression of who you are or who you want to be.

It has ****-all to do with what people who "really know shirts" think is cool. That's not a mindset too far apart from dudes who wear Affliction shirts because people they think are cool wear them.

Wow, pretty hostile here. I'm not claiming to know anything about fashion, and if you guys have any suggestions I'd appreciate them a lot more than just criticizing my picks. I guess I'll try to read more on these forums to try to become more educated in fashion like you guys are (even though so far most of you have just come across as dicks).

Thanks, at least you are honest. Skate rat, really? I could tie these clothes to some cliques, but skate rats wasn't one I was thinking. Honestly, compared to what everyone else in my school wears this clothing is more "respectable" than most, if you know what I mean. And I know I'm not going to be the *insert name of popular male model* of my high school, and I admit I am just going with the general look. Quite frankly I would like to become more fashionable, but I'm just not comfortable enough to do so in school. However, maybe it's something I could work on this summer (I am graduating high school and becoming an adult after all).

Thanks.

What are staple pieces (sorry, I know nothing about fashion). Isn't that what I'm trying to do here? Just buy some basic pieces that I can use with many outfits? Or are you talking about something else?

As is often said to people who start these threads, the reason we sound like "dicks" (actually more just mildly irked) is that this thread is unnecessary, unuseful to the board or to you, and easily avoidable: all you have to do is put in some time. If you really think about it, it's far more dickish to effectively come in and demand that people do the work for you by telling you what to wear. Not only is there no reason to expect people to do that (unless you're paying them to), it's not even that effective, because this is the internet and what works for you is going to be in some measure specific to you. So look at it from another point of view and you may come to some understanding why this sort of thread is less than welcomed. It is presumptuous: we are not here to fix you.

I'm a few years out of being a teenager, so maybe my view on different cliques has become skewed. But those types of running shoes were popular (behind Vans/Airwalks/Chucks), and that hoodie could come from any number of skate/surf brands. The hats less so, but those high-profile structured caps are everywhere that I see kids, regardless of group.

To expand the critique a bit - Onitsukas are classics, though usually in low-top form. Nothing wrong with those. The Tommy shoes are plain, you could probably find better quality in a similar price range elsewhere. Or looks for something white that looks less like a running shoe if you pick up the Onitsukas - Nike Dunks, cream Chuck Taylors, etc..

The WESC hoodie looks cheap - there are a lot of similar options at some place like the Vans Store/PacSun/Fast Forward, probably for half that. That's definitely skate territory. Maybe think about a couple of solid-color hoodies instead if you want to look a bit, um, older. Those are the kind of basics you can pair with different outfits.

The hats... okay, those I hate. But that's personal bias as much as anything.

The SF aesthetics, be they workwear or nu-Ivy League or whatever, have their places. But they aren't the only acceptable modes of dress.

OK, I see where you're coming from, and I'm sorry if you're flooded with these kinds of posts (trust me, I'm not a "noob" on every message board I post on). However, this post has been useful to me. I'm not just asking you guys to tell me what to wear, I'm asking for your opinions on some items that will help me kickstart a new wardrobe I want to build. I understand completely that what I buy and wear is 100% my choice and should reflect what I like, but at the same time I thought that for a first-timer like myself, running it by some "experts" would be a good idea. And guess what, it was. I've already gotten some good tips and pointers from responses and PMs that have really enlightened me, and hopefully (if it so pleases the rest of you) any more would be more than welcomed.

By the way, keeping in mind that whole "building a basic foundation for your wardrobe" thing, maybe I should just scrap these choices for right now and do just that. A good idea?

Thanks.

yes
i suggest you do this, don't make any new threads for about a month, you can reply in existing threads, and take a look at the what are you wearing now thread at the top of the page... just soak in some information before you make some bad purchases

As I initially said, scrap them, and read for a while before making informed purchases. Then you will not be wasting your money. That is, if you value the opinions of members here, which you're entitled not to.

Advice given as a result of this thread will no doubt lead to better purchases than you were contemplating to begin with, but even those are too generic to be really solid, long-term wardrobe choices. Even if you buy jeans on recommendation from some really informed and informative people, there may be others that will fit you a lot better and work with the direction you end up going. That's the kind of thing you have to figure out for yourself (and I mean for yourself as in "specific to you").
